GET INVOLVED

Around 1600 veterans leave the ADF each year involuntarily, for reasons such as medical discharge.

Financial challenges can be difficult for people to talk about and it can be overwhelming to reach out and ask for help. Unfortunately, at time of their greatest need, there are many veterans who don’t know where to turn for help.

Recognising the importance of routine and exercise for the health and wellbeing of veterans, Australian Army veteran Tim Braybon is working alongside Bravery Trust to get more serving and ex-serving members involved in parkrun:

“I know people who have reached out to Bravery Trust for help and found their support to be invaluable, with a real understanding of Defence and the challenges facing veterans during and after service,” he said.

“How can we spread the word, and make sure people know about Bravery Trust and the support available? Finances – the “f” word  – can be a tough topic for people to talk about.

“Creating a Parkrun team is one way I can assist with engaging veterans.

“Parkrun is an all-inclusive event, veterans of all ages and all fitness levels can join. It  doesn’t matter how fast you run, or even if you walk – it is about the people you meet and the connections you build.

“Importantly, getting people together initiates conversations about what it means to serve and the challenges faced by some when they leave the ADF.

“So join me as a member of our new parkrun team called Bravery Trek – Supporting ADF Veterans.

“Make weekend exercise a part of your routine, and connect with other veterans.”
